Late Summer Flowers
Many people view the summer being over at the end of August when work goes back to your regular schedule, children are back in school, and the traffic is back to its chaotic state. Your garden isn't finished yet! There are many flowers that thrive late in summer and far into fall. Some perennials with great long lasting color and will survive an early frost are Sedums, Asters, Rudbeckia, and Echinacea.
Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is a true performer and will carry its seed heads into the winter. It is a great plant to use for a front or mid border of the garden.
Asters are the classic autumn flower. Some varieties such as Aster x frikartii 'Monch', A. novaeangliae and A. ericoides are great examples of late season performers.
Rudbeckia and Echinacea varieties for fall blooms include Rudbeckia fulgida, Rubeckia 'Goldstrum', Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea 'White Swan.
